As an intercontinental community service project last spring, students at CDS held a faculty luncheon fundraiser. The proceeds were used to purchase art supplies for students at partner school, Thabisile Primary School. The students and parents at Thabisile decided to create Zulu bracelets and necklaces from the materials as a reciprocal activity.

Chathan Day School student Nicky Vanech visited with pen pal friends in Soweto, South Africa this past summer

The students, faculty, and parents of the Thabisile School in South Africa made the cultural jewelry over the summer. The final pieces were recently brought back to New Jersey by CDS’ very own eighth grader, Nicky Vanech. The jewelry will be sold as the final part of the project, and the proceeds will be used to fund an educational need at the Thabisile School.

She’s pulled in all the members of her family and they hope to visit their designated recipients, the Delta Primary School in South India, as a future project. Surya also decided that for her “Sweet Sixteen” birthday she would ask those attending to donate to her cause in lieu of gifts to her. Way to go Surya!
